Double Page Spread Image Selection Process

I actually didn't use any of these from this set, for my double page spread- because i didn't think the were up to the standard i hoped for. I also didn't think that they portrayed what i wanted to such as the 2nd photograph my friend is smiling and does portray the serious band that i wanted them to. 

Secondly this picture- she is also smiling and i didn't think it was effective- it also doesn't show both of the members.

Contents Page photo selection process 2.

These are some of the photographs to use for my contents page, which i took at the gig i went to. Some of them i really like such as the "KOKO" one at the bottom, also the clear ones of St Raymond (the band). I have used the bottom 3 on my actual contents page. 

However the first three are too blurry, the lighting isn't what i wanted and the view is wrong. So i have used the last 3 for my contents page, as the lighting is decent and i really like those photographs. They are also good to use as they will draw my target audience in as they are a "cool" band to go see. Likewise this will draw my target audience in as they will see that as the creators of the magazine we go to gigs and are interested in the same things as them. Overall i am pleased with this set of photographs and happy with how they turned out. 

School Magazine Image Selection process.

Photo Shoot: Selection Process;

I chose not to use these photos as some of them were too similar too each other. Additionally some of the photos were not mid shots and I needed a mid shot for the cover of the magazine. Moreover some did show the model as the hard-working girl that I needed. Some of the photos show unflattering angles which would not help the image I wanted to portray. Although they are dressed correctly some of the photos just do not fit the criteria.

Central Image- 

The central image of my magazine will be depicting a girl looking at a "results" paper and looking happy. I want this to be This will signify that the sixth form is a good place to go and people will enjoy their time there. As she is happy with her results. The photo will be mid shot. This will show the student in a wide range of environments within the school complex. The figure will be female as she will look more inviting and hard-working. Implying that she is ready to get down to work. It gives a good image of the school and shows they are serious about their work. I also don't think i will have any secondary images, as i think one will be enough, and i don't want it to look too busy or over-crowded. As with the bright fonts and big headlines i don't want too many photos. 

Planning for the photoshoot of my Double Page Spread

Location: 

My location for my photo shoot will using a lift. I am looking for a lift to use as i want the lift to be resembling them "going up" in the music industry and their journey. It will be symbolic. I think this is a good idea as it shows originality and creativity. I will also be able to get a mirror shot in the background which makes it look more than to dimensional and interesting. 

The Cover Model: 
What will they be wearing?
I want my band members to be wearing clothes that show their attitude and type of music. I will have the band dressed in jeans and plain t-shirts with perhaps converse or vans footwear. I will do this because I want them to look like the stereotypical rock/grunge band in all black, dark blue and grey.

Facial Expressions;
I want the cover models facial expressions to be serious and one of them to look playful or smirking. I want them to look brooding and to intrigue people. This is a band that are making their mark on the music industry and are here to stay and i want their facial expression to reflect that.

Body Language/Posture
The body language that I want them to use will be serious and most likely hands up or arms crossed. I will have some of the band members with their arms crossed whilst have some with their hands in their pockets. This makes them look like the stereotypical teenage band. 

Weather;
The weather won't play a part as it will be inside a lift, i will however have to be considerate of the lifting i am using, as i will have to choose the right camera settings.

Miscellaneous;
I am going to be taking the photos with a Canon 1200D as i want detailed shots for my magazine, that look professional. 

Planning for Contents Page (photoshoot and ideas)

Location;

Seeing as i have three different photos on my contents page i have three different locations. One of these was at a concert i went to (St Raymond), i wanted this to be on my contents page as it is a genuine photograph from the type of band that my target audience listen to. Also it would show value and look more realistic than if i set it up, it will also attract a target audience as they will see that there are gig reviews in the magazine. Secondly is a picture of my younger sister as an artist- this is to represent diversity within the magazine and too show something different, this will be shot in my house with a white wall for simplicity. The last location i am using is also a white wall with one of my friends as a rock/alternative singer also. I will take photos from a number of different angles to get a variety of shots. The location will play a key part in my photo-shoot as it sets the mood for the photos. So with there being a gig it creates a fun, grungy atmosphere with the lighting/darkness. Whereas the white wall creates simplicity. 

Body Language;
As with the other photo-shoots the body language used by the models will be relatively care free and non-imposing. I wanted this posture because it links in with the darker theme of rock and the aura that that specific genre of music creates. The models will either stand with their arms crossed or lean against an object as well as this the camera angles that i will use will be low angle and eye level. I am using low angles to reflect the position of authority and power that the artists have over the reader.

Facial Expressions;
The  models facial expressions will either be blank and serious or smiling/smirking to show a playful side as i don't want it to all be serious. The facial expression used by the model is very important as it helps create the image that I want, which is that of a fun by serious side as well.

Weather;
The weather will not play a major part in the photo-shoot as it will take place inside, so i don't have to worry about that. I do however need to consider lighting as inside the gig it will be dark with not much light. 

Other;
The photos will be taken using a Canon 1200D and a Macbook Air to edit them. 

I want my Contents Page to look professional and intriguing but also simple as i don't want it to look tacky. 

That is why  i really like the Q contents page and will most likely take this for inspiration.

Selection Process of Final Front Cover Image(s)

Here are the photos i liked from my photoshoot to choose a final front cover image(s). 

I didn't use this image as it isn't a mid-shot and the faces they are pulling don't suit the image I'm going for. 

I also didn't use this image, as she looks too happy for the music i am portraying and it also doesn't show both of the performers so wouldn't be appropriate. 

This is the image i used for my front cover. I felt that is would attract my target audience as it portrays my band as a similar band to Royal Blood, which is what i wanted. I think it also portrays them as a serious band gives them a certain mysteriousness which i think is good and is what every Alternative band needs. 

I actually took inspiration from this photograph of them: 

This one is similar to the picture i used, i just felt that the actual picture i used was more interesting as it was in black and white and also showed something different.

i was going to choose this one as a secondary image, but then once i had put in my text and the image i chose, i decided i only wanted one image and so did not use it. 

Double Page Spread Mockup

This is my mock up for my double page spread, as you will see in the final product i have swapped this around. So the main article is actually on the right and the image is on the left. I thought this was more effective as, i thought people should see the image/band first and then read the article and who they are on the right hand side. 

Mock up of front Cover

Here I have made a mock up of the front cover of my music magazine. I have added aspects that I admire and aspects that are popular with other music magazines of this genre. 
I have included key conventions such as; Masthead, Strap Lines, cover model, Cover lines and main coverline, Tag Line, puff and a barcode, issue date and price. This mock up will be what i intend to follow to what will become the front cover. After looking at other Alternative Rock magazine covers such as NME and Kerrang. These magazines have inspired me as the target audience of these magazines have similar age range and i have noticed that they often have very busy but not particularly colourful front covers, i.e NME magazine. They tend to use main, staple colours such as black, red and white. I plan to use similar colours, but perhaps more colourful like electric blue and green. The cover model will be styled like Paramore or Royal blood (notorious bands of the genre) this will be used to allow the target audience to see what type of magazine this is as they will associate with the cover model(s). Furthermore my double page spread and contents page will follow this colour scheme. This has all been influenced by my imaginary entity and target audience as i have studied what they will most likely want in  a magazine and what will attract them to buy it e.g. famous band on the front cover and non-convention front cover colours. Such as grey, blue and black. The font will vary on size and style depending on the importance of each coverline and how much it needs to stand out. Although my magazine will be full i still want it to be tidy, in my mock up i only have one secondary image, however after looking at more magazines of my genre i have realised there is usually only one main image as too focus on that particular band. So i will most likely only have a main cover image. I have also taken inspiration from my imaginary entity so my front cover will be simplistic, without being boring. Influenced by the consideration of my DPS and Contents Page, i want all of them to match. whilst being significant to one another. I want them all to have a particular style, that one could see resonates within my created CP, DPS and my front cover. Furthermore font choices are important as i want mine to be easily recognisable for my genre of music. So big, bold fonts combined with my cover lines being in smaller fonts will hopefully achieve this. 

Planning Photoshoot

The concept:I am going to need three different sets of photographs for my magazine. A set for the front cover, one for the contents page and the other for the double page spread.
For my front cover I want to style my friends as people such as Royal Blood or Paramore as they are two profound names in the rock/alternative world. They will also be recognizable and consequently a selling point of my magazine. Royal Blood are two men aged 20-30 so will be attractive to my target audience as they are relatable. They frequently wear black and look moody, so i will take these points as features that I might consider to remember when choosing people to model and then styling them. As it is my central image I will need a mid-shot as they are most commonly used, and most effective on the front of a magazine. I am going to need to give my models some direction in what I want them to do and I will decide this on the day.

My secondary image is going to be taken in a different set. I plan on having a picture of a huge crowd for a gig or concert. As I think this will be inviting and also a selling point as there will be a chance to win tickets to a concert in the magazine. I plan on taking these photos next week as I am going to a concert with my friend and therefore can take some shots of the crowd.
For my contents page, I have been thinking of some ideas and looking at existing products to get some inspiration of pictures which I can put here.  I have a couple of ideas, which are, for my first photo in my contents magazine I think I am going to have one of the shots I got from the concert, as this will be featured with a headline, which will be a selling point to the magazine. As it will show other people having fun at one of these gigs. Also in my contents page I want to have a picture of some people listening to music together, to advertise what the magazine is about, this will be people who listen to this genre of music, and who look like they do to make the target audience of the magazine obvious. For my last picture on my contents page I am going to have another exclusive picture of the band, which will be linked to a cover line also. 
My double page spread will have 1 image, and because it is going to be writing about a cover line the image needs to be anchored to that story. So I will have to choose these images when I decide on the story.
The Aims:My aims for my photo shoot are that I want them to link and be of anchorage to the magazine. They need to be inviting so that people then want to read about the story after seeing the image. Also they need to be exciting and genuine, whilst looking professional. They should also be relevant and entice people in, should they be seeing a photo of their "favourite band"
The locations:Set 1 – Band Photo I plan on taking this set in front of either a brick wall or in some sort of forest setting, so to make the band look mysterious and the "in the middle of nowhere" effect.   
Set 2- Concert crowdI plan on taking these photos at a concert I am going to next week. This will be a crowded location, and be taken outside with natural lighting.

The props: My second set will not have any props as they are going to be genuine photos from a concert. 
The equipment and preparation:I am going to be using my camera for all sets to ensure I get good quality photos, however in the concert i may use my phone camera so that they are slightly worse quality to make them look like genuine concert photos as i doubt many people take their big, professional cameras to gigs. 

School Magazine Photoshoot Planning

For my preliminary task I am going to be producing a school magazine. For my magazine I am going to need a central image as well as a secondary image. I am going to take two sets of photos one for my central image and the other for my secondary image. 

Location

The location of my photo-shoot will be within the school, as my magazine I will want to showcase the school. My secondary image will also be inside the school to show off the schools facilities. The cover model image however will be outside to show the name and the banner for the school.

The cover model

My cover model will be of a student who go's to the school as it will showcase some of the students. My cover model will also be a sixth-form student as this shows longevity of the school life.

Clothes

 My cover model will also be wearing clothes that are relevant and fashionable to today to show that the school is current. They will be smartly dressed to show that the school is respectable.

Facial expressions

Facial expressions will show that the student is happy and pleased to be at the school. My cover model will be smiling and maybe performing a talent such as playing the piano to also show diversity and talent within the school.

Body language/ posture

My cover model's body language will be open and not in a staged stance. I have done this because it will show that the school is a light-hearted, joyous place to be. Also certain stances could be perceived in a certain way. Or misinterpreted so by doing this there won't be risk of this.

Weather

Weather is important as a dark, rainy day could make the photo look miserable, which then might reflect on the magazine and the school itself. So ideally the photo will be taken on  a bright, sunny day to entice readers, and  to make the school look inviting.

Miscellaneous- how you take the photos

I will take the photos from a lower angle to show off the cover model. Also to make the school look more impressive at a lower angle thus accentuating it.
